Syngenta, McDonald’s US, and Lopez Foods collaborate to enhance sustainability of beef production

Syngenta, McDonald's US, and Lopez Foods, a supplier of?McDonald's, announced a partnership?on?Nov. 14. McDonald's US will incorporate Syngenta's ENOGEN??corn in its beef production to enhance feed efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This collaboration aims to boost sustainability in beef production?of McDonald's and its beef supply chain.

In May, Syngenta launched its sustainability focus in four key areas: more efficient planting, healthier soil, more prosperous rural areas and more sustainable operations, integrating them comprehensively into its business strategy. Guided by these sustainable development priorities, Syngenta continues to inspire and accelerate sustainable innovation, leading to a range of technological achievements that drive carbon emission reduction along the agricultural and food production industrial chains.

ENOGEN??corn, an innovative seed product exclusively developed by Syngenta, can be used as both grain feed and silage feed. It contains a?highly efficient alpha amylase enzyme that rapidly converts starch into easily absorbable sugars, significantly improving feed digestibility and conversion efficiency. This is a key pathway to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in livestock production systems.

Research has shown that feeding ENOGEN??as silage or grain can improve feed efficiency by about 5?percent, resulting in significant environmental benefits such as reduced?greenhouse gas emissions and lower use of land, energy, and water per unit of beef production. Specific findings show that, per 1,000 head of beef cattle, this collaboration could potentially achieve annual savings of?196 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions annually. McDonald's plans to scale this program to help deliver over 164,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions?annually.
